A Perfect Circle Rules Rock Albums Charts, Sleep Makes Billboard 200 Debut

  A Perfect Circle

A Perfect Circle leads Top Rock Albums & Alternative Albums, while Sleep enters Hard Rock Albums at No. 2

A Perfect Circle earns its first No. 1 album on a Billboard chart as the five-piece debuts at No. 1 on Top Rock Albums and Alternative Albums with Eat the Elephant.

The band's first full-length since 2004's eMOTIVe starts with 68,000 equivalent album units (63,000 in traditional album sales), according to Nielsen Music.

Much of the discography for the band, whose singer is Tool's Maynard James Keenan, precedes the Top Rock Albums and Alternative Albums charts' mid-2000s inceptions, although the act appeared on both rankings with Three Sixty, its greatest hits collection, in 2013, reaching Nos. 13 and 7, respectively.

On the all-genre Billboard 200, Elephant becomes A Perfect Circle's fourth top five title, starting at No. 3. Its overall best: Both eMOTIVe and 2003's Thirteenth Step debuted and peaked at No. 2.

Concurrently, the band launches four tracks onto Hot Rock Songs, led by current radio single "TalkTalk" at No. 28.

Another long-running rock act returns as veteran stoner metal band Sleep enters Hard Rock Albums at No. 2 and Top Rock Albums at No. 7 with The Sciences (11,000 units). Sleep's first full-length since 1999 also marks the trio's first album to make the Billboard 200, where it starts at No. 49.

Even amid a flurry of Record Store Day releases, the set bows at No. 3 on Vinyl Albums, thanks to 5,000 vinyl purchases. (A Perfect Circle's Elephant rules the list with 7,000 vinyl sales.)

Sleep emerged from a decade-plus-long hiatus in 2009 for a pair of reunion shows. In the meantime (and since), guitarist Matt Pike became the frontman of High on Fire, which has scored three top 10s on Hard Rock Albums, led by 2015's Luminiferous (No. 2).
