Iron & Wine Premieres Nostalgic School Dance-Inspired Video for 'Bitter Truth':
Iron & Wine
Iron & Wine delivers a wildly sweet video for “Bitter Truth” off of his sixth full studio album Beast Epic.
The
video is an ode to the sweet nostalgia that comes with pre-pubescent
school dances -- you know, the kind where girls and boys are not yet
ready to make out -- with a movie-esque plot touches that involve
teachers even getting involved in the amateur romance while Iron &
Wine serves as the night's entertainment. The concept for the video was
to create a juxtaposition between adult conceptions of love, as in the
lyrics of “Bitter Truth,” versus the younger more innocent kind.
"I think there's something really poetic about how we deal with our
emotions at different ages," director Hannah Welever said. "Using the
song as a backbone, we were able to revisit this window of time full of
excitement and wonder, and compare it to a more pragmatic present-day
self. Relationships evolve and shift constantly and I find that to be
such a ubiquitous, human characteristic I find in Sam's music."
As with the honesty in "Bitter Truth," Iron & Wine said the entirety of Beast Epic, which was released in August, was
a return to minimalism and rawness: "By employing the old discipline of
recording everything live and doing minimal overdubbing, I feel like it
wears both its achievements and its imperfections on its sleeve."
The video premiere for "Bitter Truth" comes as the singer-songwriter wraps his European tour
in London on Friday (Feb. 16), picking back up with a string of
shows in Taiwan, South Korea, and Spain starting in May. Check out the
wildly endearing premiere in its entirety below.
