Casper Skulls Go 'Bonnie and Clyde' in Video for Soaring Indie Rocker 'Lingua Franca': Premiere

  Casper Skulls

Today’s the day for Toronto quartet Casper Skulls: Their debut LP is arriving on hometown label Buzz Records (Dilly Dally, Weaves), showcasing 11 polished indie rock songs crafted by a pair of songwriters. The lyrics and choruses of Neil Bednis and Melanie St. Pierre are hard at work throughout Mercy Works; bands with two excellent frontpeople --they’re a rare treat indeed.
For their latest video, Casper Skulls focus on the work of St. Pierre. It’s her track “Lingua Franca” that’s come to live in this cinematic release-day video, premiering via Billboard
"'Lingua franca by definition is a common language spoken between two people who's native languages are different,” she tells Billboard. “Communication is the cause of a lot of friction in relationships and often once the communication is lost so is the bond between people. I think when we were working on the song we wanted it to sound different depending on the listener. I think it can be heard as both a breakup song or a song about the grey areas in a relationship.”

But the clip’s conflict gets a lot deeper and darker than passive-aggressive relationship standoffs. St. Pierre continues:
“The video was directed by Benjamin Dabu at the end of the summer in Caledon, Ontario. The idea was based on classic crime duos in films like Thelma and Louise, Badlands’ Kit and Holly, and Bonnie and Clyde. We wanted the video to represent a lot of the same emotions conveyed in the song, particularly focusing on a dysfunctional relationship where the couple enables one another. I like how in the video you don't quite know what kind of crime the couple has committed which I think ties into the ambiguity of the lyrics.”
