Coldplay Joined by R.E.M.'s Peter Buck for Tom Petty Tribute; Little Steven Pays Homage During Show

Peter Buck joins Coldplay on stage to perform "Free Fallin'"  in a tribute Tom Petty at Moda Center on Oct. 2, 2017 in Portland, Oregon

The rock world lost one of its leading lights on Monday (Oct. 2) with Tom Petty's death at age 66 and the only acceptable thing to do when someone who has meant so much to music passes is to just play. That's exactly what Coldplay did on Monday night during their show at the Moda Center in Portland, where they were joined by former R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck for a cover of Petty's classic 1988 hit "Free Fallin'."

They joined a galaxy of musical greats paying homage to the beloved rocker, who recently completed a 40th anniversary tour with the Heartbreakers. In addition to their Petty nod, Coldplay began the show with a moment of silence in honor of the victims of Sunday night's (Oct. 1) massacre at the Route 91 Harvest Festival in Las Vegas.

Also paying tribute to the man he called a "brother and a true believer" was E Street Band guitarist Disciples of Soul and leader Little Steven Van Zandt, who opened his show Monday night at the Modell Performing Arts Center at the Lyric in Baltimore with a muscular version of Petty's "Even the Losers" from the rocker's 1979 landmark third album, Damn the Torpedoes
