I'm from Montgomery AL. Throughout my life on the road I've learned that there is no place like your old stomping grounds. Recently I've found a touch of home in the Montgomery AL Facebook group: "You grew up in Montgomery AL if you remember..."
Over the past couple of days folks have been discussing famous people who grew up in Montgomery. There's been a lot of discussion about who's from where, but that list includes mostly non-musicians. I thought it would be fun to list the musicians I recognized. Among the many talented artists listed were: Wilson Pickett. Tommy Shaw, Toni Tennille, Nat King Cole, John Denver, Clarence Carter, and Beth Nielsen Chapman (to name a select few).
The only one I can closely relate to is Tommy Shaw of Styx. I had always heard the story that at the time he was playing at a local bowling alley bar, Kegler's Kove, with the band Harvest (I know that much is true). However, I recently read Tommy had been playing in Chicago prior to the Kove. While he was there someone from Styx's management team had happened by and Tommy left quite the impression. When one of their guitar players quit before a big tour they came to Montgomery to find him. Not hard to find someone playing in the only bowling alley bar in Montgomery! Anyway, the rest is history. Although that was a little before my time I got to know some of the other guys in the band. What a great group, they were all very nice and super talented.
There's probably somebody famous from almost everywhere. Let me know who's famous from your hometown? What's the story?

And while I've got you, be sure to check out some of my links below. Looking forward to hearing back from you. And thanks for your continued support and friendship.
