"Are You Lonesome Tonight", a ballad that was written in 1926 and first recorded by Al Jolson, became Elvis Presley's 14th number one hit in the US. Billboard magazine reported that five answer records to "Are You Lonesome Tonight?" had been released. Four of them were different versions of the same song entitled "Yes, I'm Lonesome Tonight." The fifth was the standard "Oh How I Miss You Tonight".

Proving that his fans would buy almost anything he recorded, Frank Sinatra's version of the children's song "Ol' Mac Donald" peaks at #25 on the Billboard Hot 100 during a six week stay.

The Shangri-Las' teen-trouble classic, "Leader Of The Pack" topped the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart. It made #11 in the UK. Beatles' drummer Ringo Starr said about the song: "Oh no, they're saying the leader of the pack's dead and all that. This record's a load of rubbish. Turn it off."

Three years after he wrote "Crazy" for Patsy Cline, Willie Nelson made his first appearance at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville when he opened for Roger Miller.

Elton John was joined on stage by John Lennon at Elton's Madison Square Garden concert. They performed three numbers together, "Whatever Gets You Through the Night", "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds" and "I Saw Her Standing There". Lennon had promised the flamboyant rocker that he would make a stage appearance with him if his "Whatever Gets You Through the Night" became a #1 hit, which it did two weeks earlier. Later that same night, Lennon and his estranged wife Yoko Ono reconciled backstage after being separated for a year.

Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes combined their talents to take "(I've Had) The Time Of My Life" to the number one position on the Billboard Hot 100. It was his third chart topper and her second. The song would go on to win the 1987 Grammy award for Best Vocal Performance by a Duo and an Oscar for Best Film Song.

Steppenwolf drummer Jerry Edmonton was killed in a car crash not far from his Santa Barbara, California home. He was 47.

Whitney Houston's "I Will Always Love You" reaches the top of the Billboard Hot 100 where it will stay unchallenged until next March.

Tony Meehan, drummer for The Shadows on their UK number one hit, "Apache", died in hospital from head injuries sustained in a fall. He was 62. "Apache" spent twenty-one weeks on the British music charts in 1960.

Jimmy Buffett settled his trademark infringement suit against Robert Akard, an online merchandise retailer who was accused of selling T-shirts, CDs and other Buffett-related items over the Internet without the singer's permission.

Michael Jackson's father re-filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Dr. Conrad Murray. He also added the Las Vegas pharmacy that sold the physician the powerful anesthetic blamed for Michael's death.

George Harrison's sister, Louise, announced that she had agreed to write a book about her life growing up with her famous brother. Her memoir, My Kid Brother's Band... A.K.A The Beatles, was finally released in September, 2014 and would contain her recollections, letters and never-before-seen photographs from her family album.

Britain's Daily Mail reported that George Harrison's sister was living in a pre-fabricated home and "struggling for money" since her allowance from The Beatles star's estate was cut off about a year after he passed away. 82-year-old Louise Harrison admitted that she had no access to her brother's multi-million dollar fortune and is cash-poor living in rural Missouri. She never challenged her brother's estate, adding "I don't care about the money, it's been over ten years and I haven't made any ripples."

Rod Stewart pocketed a cool six million dollars for a performance before a boxing match between Tyson Fury and Wladimir Klitschko in Dusseldorf, Germany. Unfortunately, problems with the sound system led many of those in attendance to complain that Rod's performance was inaudible in the 54,600 capacity stadium.
